Antalya Airport chosen as Europe’s best

Antalya Airport has been declared Europe’s best airport in its size range for 2010 by Airports Council International, or ACI, Europe, Antalya news agency reported Monday.
“The Antalya Airport, which hosted 10 million passengers in the first six months of this year …, has achieved a remarkable record with more than 900 planes landing and taking off per day,” said Bilal Ekşi, the manager of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
A commencement ceremony attended by government officials from Antalya and other Turkish aviation authorities was held Monday in the airport’s domestic terminal in honor of the event. Antalya was selected top among airports that handle between 10 million and 25 million passengers per year.
The number of passengers using the airport increased from 10 million in 2002 to over 22 million in 2010, said Orhan Birdal, the manager of the General Directorate of State Airports Authority, or DHMİ, according to Anatolia news agency.
“I sincerely trust that ICF Airports [the airport’s operator] will continue their work without compromising their quality of service, and that it will accrue more awards in addition to prizes that it has [already] won worldwide,” Ekşi said.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is signing new deals, while revising its existing agreements to further expand its flight network, Ekşi said, adding that the directorate had signed new deals with eight more countries in 2011, including Colombia, Madagascar, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Hungary, Iraq, Ukraine and Mexico.
Around a third of the tourists visiting Turkey pass through Antalya Airport, Antalya Deputy Gov. Mehmet Yavuz said. Some 400 airports from 46 countries are members of ACI Europe, accounting for more than 90 percent of commercial air traffic on the continent.
